ISHTAR (Internal Structure High-resolution Tomography by Asteroid Rendezvous) is a proposed mission to image the interior of an asteroid using a powerful new technology: Radar Tomography (that is, the imaging of the interior of a solid object using ground-penetrating radar). The ISHTAR mission design is centred around this Radar Tomography payload, capable to probe the interior of a small asteroid to depths of 100-200m, combined with an imager for surface characterization and a radio science experiment to measure the asteroid mass.

An artistic impression of ISHTAR mission (copyright Astrium) This unique combination will allow the first detailed characterization of a NEO (near earth objects) and will give valuable insights into the origin and evolution processes that govern the NEO population. In particular, ISHTAR will address key issues related to the threat NEOs pose to Earth:
It will help assess the impact hazard, by providing the first data on the internal structure of stony NEOs, helping to predict the likelihood of NEO fragmentation on entering the atmosphere and to solve the debate between ‘rubble pile’ and ‘solid rock’ models of NEOs.
It will give us knowledge of the fractures and voids inside the NEO and will provide the basis for devising mitigation techniques, by helping to discriminate between destructive and deflective strategies.
It will greatly advance our understanding of the origin and evolution of NEOs, by giving us vital clues about the formation of stony NEOs and their parent bodies, the age and the collisional history of NEOs.

(01-15) 08:05 PST LONDON (AP) --

U.S.-led troops using the ancient Iraqi city of Babylon as a base have damaged and contaminated artifacts dating back thousands of years in one of the world's most important archaeological sites, the British Museum said Saturday.

For example, military vehicles crushed a 2,600-year-old brick pavement, and archaeological fragments, including broken bricks stamped by King Nebuchadnezzar II around the same time, were scattered across the site, a museum report said.

The dragons at the Ishtar Gate were marred by cracks and gaps where someone tried to remove their decorative bricks, the paper said.

John Curtis, keeper of the British Museum's Near East department, who was invited by the Iraqis to study the site, also found that large quantities of sand mixed with archaeological fragments have been taken from the site to fill military sandbags.

"This is tantamount to establishing a military camp around the Great Pyramid in Egypt or around Stonehenge in Britain," Curtis said in the report.

In an interview Saturday with Associated Press Television News, Iraq's Minister of Culture Mufeed al-Jazairee said coalition troops in Babylon had used "armored vehicles and helicopters that land and take off freely. In addition to that, the forces also set up other facilities and changes."

He added: "I expect that the archaeological city of Babylon has sustained damage but I don't know exactly the size of such damage."

The remains of Babylon have been occupied since the early days of the invasion by U.S. Marines and, more recently, by soldiers from Poland and other countries. Babylon is 50 miles south of Baghdad.

A Polish military spokesman in Iraq said troops were cooperating with Iraqi authorities in efforts to protect the site.

"I have asked our archaeologists to prepare a specific answer to the accusations, but I have to give them some time," Lt. Col. Artur Domanski said.

The city's main sites -- the Ishtar Gate, the ruins of Babylon and the Nebuchadnezzar Palace -- are in a separate area on the camp's perimeter, run by Iraqi officials as an archaeological park to paying visitors.

The U.S. military says all earth moving has been halted and it is considering moving troops away to protect the ruins.

Lt. Col. Steven Boylan, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, said all engineering works were discussed with the head of the Babylon museum.

"An archaeologist examined every construction initiative for its impact on historical ruins," he said.

In the report, Curtis acknowledged that at first the U.S. presence had helped to protect the site from looters.

But subsequent work -- including the decision to cover large areas of the site with gravel brought in from elsewhere to provide car parks and helipads -- was damaging, he said.

Lord Redesdale, an archaeologist who heads a parliamentary archaeology committee, described the report's findings as "just dreadful."

"Not only is what the American forces are doing damaging the archaeology of Iraq, it's actually damaging the cultural heritage of the whole world," he said.

For more than 1,000 years, Babylon was one of the world's premier cities, where King Nebuchadnezzar II built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The fivepointed star was a sacred symbol in Sumeria and pre-Columbian America, although in the latter with rounded points, and may have been a symbol of Venus based on its orbit. I think the Mayan culture had succeeded in discovering the pentagram shaped orbit. They certainly had advanced knowledge of the timing of the appearances of the Morning star and the Evening star, that is, the orbit of the planet Venus.

In any event, the symbol for Ishtar/Venus has almost always been an eight pointed star. Don't know what to make of that.
Nothing beats a flaming apocalyptic theory like a conspiracy theory...

This is how it starts. Everyone from paranoid Rapture-ready right-wing conservatives to mysterious Australian astronomers to weird alarmist economists all suddenly realize their various yelps and screams and chat-room rants are running parallel and that they're all ringing the same bell.

And all their stories merge into some sort of dazzling interconnected web, an impressive and slightly disturbing jamboree of destruction and mayhem and global economic collapse that, if all goes as predicted, will all come down within the next few weeks.

There is this underground doozy making the e-rounds right now, crazed and random and already being tossed about and bunked and debunked and rebunked like a conspiratorial salad as I write this.

It involves all the best ingredients listed above, along with plenty of genuine obtuse jargon and sparkling gems of actual truth (the hallmarks of any really good conspiracy theory), just enough to make everything resonate with possibility and imminence and wicked gobs of creepiness.

And you have to ask: It is in any way odd or suspicious or bizarre that all the following events are happening at the same time? Is there a common thread? And is that thread barbed and nasty and does it involve doom and destruction and scary lizard people running around eating human babies and speaking in funny clicking noises? You be the judge.

The synopsis: The Fed is suddenly acting very strangely, cranking up the nation's Money Supply (M-3) by "crisis proportions." A massive chunk of the U.S. Navy carrier fleet is suddenly deployed in a huge, never-before-attempted global maneuver, coordinated with the fleets of a dozen other major countries. Threats of some sort of massive terrorist attack loom like alarmist storm clouds. Unprecedented numbers of meteors and comet sightings splatter all over the globe.

WITHIN a few weeks, will occur an event universally regarded as one of the most important and
interesting which can happen in the whole range of astronomical phenomena. It is the passage of
the planet Venus across the disk of the sun on the 8th of December, 1874. The last occasion of this
kind was on June 3, 1769. It was then considered so important that all the leading civilized nations sent out
expeditions to observe it. It was one of these which was conducted by Captain Cook to the Island of Otaheite
in the Southern Pacific Ocean, when observations were made at a point called to this day, Venus Point.
